Support Day One when you shop at the Co-op
You can now raise funds for Day One Major Trauma Support just by shopping at your local Co-op store. The support service has recently been chosen as one of the local causes that will benefit from the Local Community Fund in Leeds.
The Fund supports projects that bring people in the local community together. This initiative launched three years ago and has so far raised £56 million to benefit causes across the UK.
New and existing Co-op members who live within a 15-mile radius of the Major Trauma Centre at Leeds General Infirmary can now choose Day One as their good cause.
When you shop in any food store or funeralcare service across the UK, 1% of the total cost of selected products will go towards Day One, specifically to help train new peer support volunteers.
Day One’s successful Peer Support programme is led by ex-major trauma patients. A dedicated group of volunteers who give up their time to provide practical and emotional support to patients and families on the unit.
Peer Support volunteer, Catherine Clark said, “The best thing about volunteering for Day One is that I am giving something back to Leeds Teaching Hospitals and supporting patients who have been through a similar experience to me. It’s a very gratifying role, especially when patients see that recovery does happen and normal life can resume again.”
With money from the Co-op Local Community Fund, Day One hopes to extend the Peer Support programme to establish new volunteer groups in the local community.
