Meet Yvonne: Leeds Cares Volunteer

Yvonne Berry is one of our amazing volunteers who gives up her time to help out in our Bexley Wing shop!

70 year-old Yvonne is married and has 1 daughter, 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. Unfortunately, one of Yvonne’s sons was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma at just 5 weeks old; he received lifesaving treatment for this.

When Yvonne was asked to help fundraise for Candle lighters Charity 45 years ago she jumped at the chance to give something back! Yvonne helped raise an incredible £6,000 to create a purpose built cancer building for leukaemia at Seacroft Hospital.

This spurred Yvonne on to do some fundraising for a cause close to her heart – Neuroblastoma.

Earlier in Yvonne’s career she obtained a childcare qualification, she worked in a Nursery and then went on to become a child minder so that she could be her own boss!

She was visiting the blood clinic one day and saw our shop in Bexley Wing and thought she would like to do her bit for the Leeds Cancer Centre. Then she heard someone shout “I know you” and turned to see Pauline, a friend of hers. And that’s when Yvonne decided to apply to become a volunteer.

Yvonne is a real people person and loves chatting to everyone. Despite the fact she lives far away from the hospital, Yvonne still makes the effort to come in and volunteer with us regularly.

If you’d like to support Leeds Cares by volunteering for us, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch to discuss what opportunities are available. Contact fundraising@leeds-cares.org.
