Meet John: Leeds Cares Volunteer

John Pearson is one of our amazing volunteers who gives up his time to support Leeds Cares!

72 year-old John Pearson is one of our inspirational volunteers who gives up his time to support Leeds Cares. John volunteers with the fundraising team every single Thursday!

Having been a patient at the Leeds Cancer Centre since 2011, John wanted to give something back as a thank you for the amazing care he received. He found an article about volunteering in our charity newsletter and decided to apply.

In his spare time John loves supporting his football team – Leeds United of course! He also enjoys gardening, walking and looking after his three grandchildren.

John has been volunteering with us for four years, helping with everything from poster distribution around St James’ Hospital to giving talks in local schools about the Leeds Cancer Centre.

“Volunteering definitely has a direct impact on people’s decision to donate to Leeds Cares"

John loves volunteering and says he gets a lot out of it: “I work with some lovely people in the fundraising team and I also enjoy meeting new people when I’m out and about. It does feel like you’re making a difference”.  As well as supporting Leeds Cares with our fundraising efforts, John also volunteers within the hospital itself. He provides a ‘meet and greet’ service for patients at St James’ Hospital every Friday morning.

Fundraising helps us to support the different areas of the hospital, including; buying equipment, refurbishing patient areas and developing new services. As a volunteer, John is proud to be part of making change happen, “Volunteering definitely has a direct impact on people’s decision to donate to Leeds Cares and it’s really nice to see how those donations then benefit the Leeds Cancer Centre”.

If you’d like to support Leeds Cares by volunteering for us, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch to discuss what opportunities are available. Email
