James’s Story: Taking on the UCI Sportive

James is cycling in memory of his Grandma who was treated at Leeds Cancer Centre.

James Gledhill, Clerical Officer at Leeds Dental Institute is joining ‘Team ‘Leeds Cares’ with a group of colleagues at the UCI Road World Championships Official Sportive this September, cycling in memory of his late Grandma.

“My incredible Grandma recently lost her battle against cancer. Her hard exterior, stubbornness and drive to get things done influenced me through the years. Her strong opinions “gran knows best” and lovable smile would light up the room. Growing up I would visit my Grandma almost every Sunday and be fed some exceptional food. Those who grew up with me will have seen and in recent years especially on my Snapchat with captions such as ‘My Gran’s food is better than yours!’ ”

“I’ve signed up for the long route of the UCI Sportive which is an outstanding 93 miles – I have never done anything like this before! I’m raising funds for Leeds Cares because they provide fundamental support to Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. My Grandma received outstanding care from staff at Leeds Cancer Centre and I’m so grateful for all their hard work.”

“Leeds Cares has significantly helped our NHS in Leeds provide all our loved ones with the best care in every circumstance. Now I’ve got the chance to return the favour by throwing myself into this difficult challenge – it’s my honour to raise money for Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Let’s have it!”

There’s still time to sign up to the UCI Official Sportive and raise valuable funds in support of Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
