Chaplaincy & Spiritual Care
Leeds Cares is proud to contribute £250,000 a year to fund the Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care Services at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
The service provides care 24/7 via an on call system so the team can be called day or night.
The team support anyone religious or non-religious around their faith and beliefs. From putting on events and services for staff, patients and families throughout the year, to providing seriously ill patients and their loved ones with emotional and spiritual support in times of need.
Staff provide bereaved families with emotional and practical support when they need it most. They also organise services in our chapels, including weddings, funerals and memorials.
In 2019, we contributed £387,000 worth of funding to help the service expand across the Trust. This supported a variety of events throughout last year, including:
- A prayer day to celebrate Guru Nanak’s 550th birthday
- Diwali celebrations
- Christmas carol services in the chapels and on hospital wards
- ‘Time for Remembering’ baby memorial service for parents and families who have sadly lost their babies
Leeds Cares also provides refreshments for the dedicated group of Chaplaincy volunteers who give up their time to visit patients on wards across hospital sites.
Reverend Ben Rhodes, Head of Chaplaincy at Leeds Teaching Hospitals said, “Without funding from Leeds Cares we wouldn’t have been able to do half of the things we did last year, we really do rely on their support. It’s important to us that we can do whatever we can to bring some joy and normality to patients and families at what may be a very difficult time.”
Thanks to continued support from Leeds Cares, in 2020 the Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care Service hopes to expand its existing volunteering programme, provide more holistic support to young patients at Leeds Children’s Hospital and fund educational training for staff.
