Meet Catherine Clark: Day One Peer Support Volunteer
Catherine has volunteered with Day One Trauma Support since November 2017
“I first got involved with Day One when I was waiting for surgery on my pelvis. My surgeon, Prof Giannoudis advised me to talk with Sarah, a previous patient who had also fractured her pelvis and had similar surgery that I would soon be going through.
“I officially started volunteering with Day One through Leeds Cares in November 2017. I decided to become a Peer Support Volunteer after talking to Sarah; I thought it would be something I could do in the future to give something back.
“Sarah gave me invaluable support and advice and I wanted to do the same after I had recovered. Unfortunately, I had to retire from my job as a District Nursing Sister on ill health. I actually trained to be a nurse at the LGI in the 1980s, so it was great to come back here as a volunteer!”
“It’s a very gratifying role, especially when patients see that recovery does happen and normal life can resume again.”
“I volunteer on the trauma ward every Thursday, we then serve tea and coffee in the outpatient clinic. Volunteering for Day One involves talking to patients on the trauma ward, other wards across the hospital and even travelling to other hospitals. We also sometimes visit patients at home if they want to see us again.
“The best thing about volunteering for Day One is that I am giving something back to Leeds Teaching Hospitals and supporting patients who have been through a similar experience to me. It’s a very gratifying role, especially when patients see that recovery does happen and normal life can resume again.
“I would encourage people to volunteer with Day One and Leeds Cares because you really can make a difference. When I see patients in follow up outpatient clinics after recovery, they are so grateful for the support and advice I gave them on the ward!”
