Fundraiser Jacqui hits 10% milestone in million pound target

Award winning choreographer Jacqui Drake from Apperley Bridge, near Bradford, was first diagnosed with cancer in 1993. For sixteen years she lived cancer free until she was diagnosed with secondary cancer in 2009.

In 2015 Jacqui’s cancer had spread to her lungs and an operation was necessary to remove the right lung. Today, Jacqui continues to receive treatment at the Leeds Cancer Centre but she is now terminally ill with stage 4 malignant melanoma.

Despite all of these ups and downs, Jacqui has remained positive throughout and when receiving her terminal diagnosis, she made a pledge to try and raise as much money as possible for the Leeds Cancer Centre, in return for the fantastic care she’s received there.

Her appeal, with the tag line ‘Jacqui’s million – positive about cancer’ has the objective to raise a million pounds for Leeds Cares, with all of the money being donated directly for use in the cancer centre.

Last week, Jacqui reached her first major milestone in the appeal when an anonymous donor took her current total to just over £100,000.

So far, the phenomenally energetic Jacqui has been raising funds through the sale of candles and positivity merchandise, alongside using her dancing & choreography skills to hold cabaret events. When Jacqui found out about her new total she said “It’s fabulous! Due to this anonymous donation and the recent sale of lots more candles, I can’t believe we’ve hit the £100K mark – I’m so pleased and proud of all my supporters for achieving this as part of ‘Jacqui’s million’”.

Sharon Link, Head of Fundraising at Leeds Cares, said “Jacqui is an absolutely formidable woman, so passionate and positive in all that she does. We’re all delighted that her appeal has reached this milestone and are confident she’ll carry on campaigning and raising money until she’s hit that million – all to be donated specifically to the amazing work of the Leeds Cancer Centre!”

Jacqui’s next fundraising event is a ‘Greatest Showman’ themed fundraising ball in Leeds on 23rd March 2019. Tickets can be purchased through Facebook.
